A new deployment for European users
Scaleway announced the Swedish AI supercomputer on October 13.[1] It described the project as its first supercomputer deployment outside France and called it Europe’s first commercial AMD AI supercomputer.[1] Scaleway says startups, AI companies and enterprises across Europe will be able to use the system for both training and inference.[1] The company says the deployment is intended to expand European access to high-performance AI computing and responds to demand for European-controlled GPU capacity.[2] Those statements describe the intended audience and rationale, but do not set out service terms.
AMD hardware and software
The system is built around AMD Instinct MI355X accelerators and AMD’s ROCm software.[1] Giga Computing says the multi-rack deployment uses GIGABYTE G4L3-ZX1-LAT4 servers with direct liquid cooling.[3] Each server has eight MI355X GPUs and two AMD EPYC 9005 CPUs.[3] AMD lists 288 gigabytes of high-bandwidth memory and peak memory bandwidth of 8 terabytes per second for each MI355X, with typical board power of 1,400 watts.[1] Those are product specifications, not measurements of the Swedish system.[1]
Suppliers and service claims
Bull is responsible for integrating the cluster and handling installation and maintenance, while Giga Computing is supplying the servers.[1] HPE Networking is supplying the Ethernet fabric, VAST Data the data platform, and Motul the liquid-cooling fluid.[1] Giga Computing says customers will be able to train, fine-tune and serve large models on an open software stack.[3] It also says workloads and data on the service remain under EU jurisdiction, and that Scaleway’s sovereign cloud services let organizations run sensitive and critical workloads.[3]
Commercial details remain unannounced
Scaleway’s announcement did not specify the number of accelerators, total compute capacity, opening date, pricing, reservation minimum, contract length, queue policy or whether on-demand capacity will be available.[1] It also did not publish the system’s power envelope, expected utilization, water use or an independent estimate of its operating footprint.[1] A synopsis by The Economic Times says Sweden was chosen for its sustainable energy resources and growing AI industry.[4] For prospective users, the hardware and service claims establish a technical direction, but the missing capacity and access terms leave important procurement questions unanswered.
For teams assessing where to train or run models, the announcement signals a European AMD-based option while leaving the practical questions of capacity, cost and access unanswered. Professionals should distinguish accelerator specifications from system-level performance and seek deployment details before making a commitment.
