OpenAI Turns ChatGPT Into an App Discovery and Launch Surface

At its Tuesday Dev Day, OpenAI announced features that TechCrunch says collectively point toward disrupting the traditional app-store model, with ChatGPT becoming a place where software can be discovered, launched, and used by people and agents. [1]

OpenAI also introduced a way for users to carry their ChatGPT identity into third-party apps and use their existing AI allowance there. [1]

OpenAI says ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, and the service will begin suggesting apps within conversations when it recognizes that particular software could help a user complete a task. [1]

Users will be able to connect and operate suggested apps directly within ChatGPT, while an expanded plugin architecture supporting extensions lets developers build interactive panels for use during chats. [1]

OpenAI is trying to move app discovery and use from a separate storefront or native application into the conversational context where a task is already being discussed. Compared with traditional app stores, websites, and desktop or mobile apps, ChatGPT would combine recommendation, connection, and operation in one interface; its stated 1.2 billion weekly users gives that interface a large existing audience. The identity and AI-allowance features also make ChatGPT part of how users enter and consume third-party software, not merely where they hear about it. What the sources don't address: what commercial terms, review rules, privacy controls, or developer economics will govern apps distributed through ChatGPT.
