Nolla Health launches AI acne prescriptions for Utah adults

5 OCTOBER 2026·2 MIN READ·2 SOURCES

Nolla Health says its Nolla Derm app is issuing AI-generated initial prescriptions for acne to Utah residents aged 18 and older under a state regulatory agreement. The pilot covers topical treatments for mild to moderate acne, with physician review built into its rollout.

Key takeaways · 4

  • 01

The app can issue an initial prescription, not just renew an existing one, for eligible Utah adults.

  • 02

The $4.99 monthly pilot price is discounted from Nolla’s standard $9.99 price.

  • 03

The pilot excludes oral medication, isotretinoin and severe acne.

  • 04

Physician review is planned for all of the first 100 prescriptions, the next 400 retrospectively each week, and at least 10% per month afterward.

How the app assesses acne

Nolla Derm analyzes a patient’s skin, rates oiliness and generates a numerical acne-severity score.[2] It combines that score with the patient’s medical information to recommend medication from a list of eight treatments.[2] The signup process takes about 10 to 15 minutes and, according to Nolla, can produce a treatment plan and initial prescription without an existing prescription.[1] The pilot is limited to Utah adults with mild to moderate acne and topical treatments.[1] Its approved topical formulary includes tretinoin, adapalene, clindamycin with benzoyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide and azelaic acid.[1]

Who is eligible—and who is not

The pilot requires identity and age verification, confirms Utah residency and sends prescriptions only to Utah addresses.[1] It excludes oral medication, isotretinoin and severe acne.[1] Patients whose acne-severity score is above 3.5 are escalated to a physician before a prescription, while a score of 4.0 directs them to in-person dermatological care.[1] The pilot price is $4.99 per month, compared with Nolla’s standard monthly price of $9.99.[1] These criteria make the service a limited option, rather than a route to AI-issued prescriptions for all acne cases.[1]

Physician review and oversight

The first 100 AI-generated prescriptions will receive physician review before submission to a pharmacy.[2] The next 400 will be submitted by AI and reviewed retrospectively by a physician each week; after those stages, a physician will review at least 10% of prescriptions each month.[2] A third-party physician appointed by Utah’s medical board was added to oversee prescription reviews.[2] Each prescription is transmitted under an overseeing physician’s National Provider Identifier and marked as AI-initiated.[1] The available evidence describes staged review, not the removal of physician involvement.[2][1]

A limited agreement, with objections

The pilot operates under an agreement among Utah’s Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy, its Division of Professional Licensing and Nolla Health’s operating entities.[1] The agreement provides limited regulatory mitigation and says it is not a state endorsement or approval.[1] It lasts 12 months from when Nolla makes the technology available to customers and notifies the state in writing.[1] Utah requires monthly quantitative reporting and audits sandbox participants while agreements remain in force; the state office may end an agreement at any time.[1] Utah’s Medical Licensing Board said it was not consulted and that the program placed residents at risk.[2]

For healthcare teams, this pilot offers a concrete case to examine when AI-generated treatment recommendations become prescriptions and what oversight accompanies them. For product, compliance and policy professionals, its eligibility rules, staged physician review and limited regulatory agreement are important design constraints—not evidence that the state endorses autonomous medical practice.
