Microsoft Recasts Copilot as a Unified Workspace for Office, Code and Agents

Microsoft has introduced a new Copilot experience that brings AI agents, Office tools and natural-language software creation together, positioning the product as a place to ask questions, delegate longer tasks, produce documents and build small solutions. [1][2][5] The new Home interface combines Chat, which handles questions, lookups and drafting, with Cowork, which performs multistep assignments and returns completed results. Office in Copilot embeds Word, Excel and PowerPoint in the assistant, allowing users to create and update editable documents, spreadsheets and presentations without leaving the Copilot experience. [2][3][4] Files can remain synchronized with their corresponding Microsoft 365 applications, while eligible subscribers and businesses in Microsoft’s testing program are expected to gain creation, editing and sharing capabilities in the coming weeks. The new Code environment lets users describe applications, dashboards, trackers, automations or workflows in natural language, uses technology related to GitHub Copilot and runs in a sandboxed or enterprise-controlled environment. Autopilot, previously called Scout, is designed to continue working without repeated prompts by monitoring channels, following up on threads, handling recurring work and resuming projects that extend over multiple days. Copilot is becoming less a collection of assistants embedded in separate products and more a unified control surface for documents, delegated work and lightweight software. That approach contrasts with the document-creation tools highlighted from ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Claude maker Anthropic: Microsoft is tying comparable creation capabilities to editable Office files, enterprise context and persistent agents. Code broadens the proposition further by putting application building beside everyday productivity work, while Autopilot’s identity and permission model acknowledges that persistent agents require controls resembling those applied to employees and applications. Cost visibility also makes consumption governance part of the product rather than an afterthought.
