Microsoft Unifies Chat, Code and Agents in Redesigned Copilot

Microsoft unveiled a redesigned Copilot app on September 25, combining conversational chat, coding and autonomous agents in one interface. [1][2][3] The experience combines Chat, the Cowork agent, Code and Autopilot, the persistent agent previously called Scout. [1] Microsoft said its goal is to let users describe an objective without selecting a mode, while Copilot routes the work to Chat, Cowork, Code or another capability. [1]

Copilot’s Home tab combines Copilot Chat and Cowork, while a planned Today feature will provide a personalized dashboard for emails, meeting requests and Teams threads. [3] Microsoft is also embedding Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly within Copilot. [2]

The Code tab lets users create an app, tracker, dashboard or automation and share the result with colleagues as a cloud-hosted internal app. [3] Autopilot has its own cloud computer instance and can continue running to monitor Teams channels, execute recurring work or handle follow-ups. [3]

Microsoft is shifting Copilot from a collection of recognizable features toward a workspace that chooses among chat, delegated work, coding and persistent execution. Code is particularly notable because it brings technology associated with GitHub Copilot into an interface aimed at knowledge workers, allowing internally shared tools to sit beside Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Autopilot extends that workspace beyond an active session by continuing monitoring and recurring tasks through a cloud computer. What the sources don't address: how administrators will audit automatic routing and unattended agent actions across these combined capabilities.
