Office work moves into Copilot

Microsoft says Office in Copilot combines Word, Excel and PowerPoint creation and collaboration with an AI-first way of working.[1] Users can begin in Chat or Cowork and continue editing and collaborating in the same experience.[1] For example, a user can create a Word document from a prompt and open it beside the Copilot conversation.[1] Microsoft says users can then edit directly in the canvas with familiar controls, while changes made by them or others appear in real time.[1]

Files and editing details

Microsoft says Office files stay in one file instead of generating separate drafts that users need to reconcile.[1] The Copilot app’s Library gathers recent Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, pages and AI-generated images.[1] Users can reopen files from the Library to keep editing alongside Copilot, or start new Office files there.[1] Microsoft says files retain their formatting, comments, sharing permissions and version history.[1] Those details may matter to teams deciding whether to move existing collaborative work into the Copilot experience: the company says familiar file features and controls carry over.[1]

AI assistance and organizational controls

Microsoft says users can choose an AI model for a task or let Auto select one.[1] In PowerPoint, Copilot can help keep presentations on-brand, refine slides and images, and apply custom templates.[1] In Excel, users can review Copilot’s edits, understand what changed and get chart recommendations.[1] Microsoft also says Skills and connectors can bring specialized expertise to tasks, including financial analysis in Excel and legal workflows in Word.[1] The company says Office in Copilot files inherit organizations’ existing security labels, compliance and governance controls.[1]

Frontier preview has access limits

Microsoft said Office in Copilot was rolling out to Frontier customers in Chat and Cowork.[1] Frontier gives organizations preview access to Microsoft 365 capabilities before general availability, and access defaults to no users unless an organization assigns it.[2] Administrators can assign access to no users, all users or selected users and groups; users need a Microsoft Copilot license for Copilot-related Frontier features.[2] Microsoft says preview features may change, be suspended or discontinued, and may lack standard support or service-level commitments.[2] HIPAA Business Associate Agreement coverage is not included for Frontier experiences.[2] TechEngage reported that Microsoft had not provided a general-availability date.[3]

Bringing document creation and editing into Copilot could reduce the friction of moving between AI assistance and Office work. Teams considering the preview should weigh that workflow against Frontier’s access requirements and support limitations, especially where compliance obligations matter.
