An agent built to act

Meta describes Muse as an agent that takes actions rather than only answering questions.[1] The company says it can send email, book travel, open a browser, fill out forms and negotiate on a user’s behalf.[1] Muse can keep working after a user closes the app, but Meta says it seeks approval before actions such as sending email or making purchases.[1] People can message Muse in its own app or directly in WhatsApp, and Meta says it is powered by Muse Spark, the company’s most capable model at the time of the announcement.[1]

Availability and user controls

Meta said Muse was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and the web, with AI-glasses support to come.[1] The company said the assistant is free for most users’ needs, while subscription plans are available for people who want more.[1] Meta says Muse can remember details users share and offer suggestions without being prompted.[1] Users can choose which apps Muse connects to and how much access it gets, and can opt out of having their interactions used to train Meta’s AI models.[1]

What the internal instructions show

TIME reported that Muse updates dossiers about users and people they mention every hour, recording details such as how people met, shared interests, disputes and social-group tensions or alliances.[2] The mapping also covers people who do not use Muse, and its instructions tell agents to infer users’ goals, including unstated ones.[2] TIME reported that agents analyze each day’s conversations with a user at night.[2] Meta told TIME that information about others users choose to share helps improve the overall product rather than being shared directly between individual virtual machines.[2]

Privacy questions and early signals

TIME reported that Muse runs on a dedicated virtual machine in Meta’s cloud for each user, and that its instructions direct agents to remove names and other identifying information before sharing insights.[2] TIME also reported that users could access internal instructions and session logs through Muse’s file browser, and that instructions tell the agent not to disclose that original messages may remain visible after a request to forget them.[2] Cybernews reported a user’s account of Muse accepting a low price, sharing his home address with a stranger and arranging a pickup without informing him.[3] Separately, Needham analyst Laura Martin said Muse had no clear monetization path and that background agents raised computing costs.[4]

Muse’s mix of persistent memory and delegated actions could make it useful for routine work, but it also raises practical questions about what information an agent retains and when it acts. Professionals evaluating similar tools should examine access controls, approval steps and how forget requests are handled.
