Meta has unveiled Muse Charm, a pocket-sized device that gives users direct voice access to its Muse agent as the company expands Muse into shopping, payments and wearable hardware.

Meta’s Muse Charm Puts Its AI Agent on a Keychain

Key takeaways · 4

  • 01

Evaluate Muse as a cross-device agent ecosystem rather than treating Charm as an isolated hardware product.

  • 02

Merchants should verify whether their Shopify Catalog data is shared with Meta and disable the channel if necessary.

  • 03

Agent developers need transparent platform access because Amazon is actively blocking purchasing tools it has not authorized.

  • 04

Wearable AI deployments should provide explicit controls over training data and access by external contractors.

Muse Gets Dedicated Hardware

Mark Zuckerberg revealed Muse Charm during Meta’s annual Connect event as a pocket-watch-sized device for accessing the company’s personal AI agent. [1][7] Meta has not finished laying out the device’s components, but Zuckerberg said it would be ready to ship in time for the holidays in December. [1]

Charm has a two-inch screen, a built-in 5G modem and no ability to make phone calls. [7] The palm-sized device displays Muse’s Jolly avatar and can be carried in a pocket or attached to a keychain. [1] Zuckerberg said Meta packed Muse’s real-time voice and avatar stack into the device, allowing users to press a fingerprint sensor and begin talking without unlocking a phone or opening an app. [1]

The Agent Behind Charm

Meta launched Muse on September 8 with capabilities including web browsing, form completion, travel booking and shopping. [8][10] Muse operates through a dedicated secure virtual machine with its own browser, and Meta says it can continue working after the user closes the app. [8]

Muse can connect to services including email and calendars and interact across a user’s devices and digital accounts. [3] The agent is powered by Muse Spark, Meta’s multimodal model built for agentic work. [3] Meta has also placed Muse on its AI glasses, while the agent’s physical avatar is named Jolly. [3]

Commerce Meets Platform Resistance

Shopify added Meta as a channel in Agentic Storefronts, enabling eligible US merchants to offer Shop Pay checkout through Muse. [8] Participating merchants share Shopify Catalog product data with Meta by default, although they can disable the channel. [8] Direct checkout is available to eligible US stores without fees beyond ordinary payment-processing charges. [8]

PayPal said its integration will let customers shop and check out with Muse across PayPal merchants worldwide, while Shopify and Stripe are also integrated into the agent. [11] Amazon blocked Muse from purchasing products in its app and said such activity violated its terms of use. [9] Amazon also said it had not authorized Muse to access its store and raised concerns about customer credentials, account data and whether the agent identified itself. [10]

Meta offers a free version of Muse alongside tiers priced at $20 and $100 per month. [10] Zuckerberg said Meta expects to make Muse free for a large number of tokens and eventually profit by collecting a small fee from transactions. [3]

Adoption and Privacy Questions

Muse recorded 2.8 million downloads during its first 12 days, according to reporting cited by Social Samosa. [10] Another report said the Muse app topped Apple’s App Store rankings ahead of ChatGPT. [9] Reuters reported that analysts believe younger users may respond to Charm’s nostalgic, companion-style design, while earlier AI handheld failures have raised doubts about demand beyond early adopters. [7]

Meta says users of its AI glasses will be able to prevent their visual data from being used for AI training or shown to third-party contractors outside the United States. [6] Meta also introduced $1,299 VR glasses weighing about 100 grams, with an external compute pack, a three-hour battery and approximately 2.5K resolution per eye. [5] The VR glasses are scheduled to go on sale in spring 2027. [5]

What it means

Charm makes Muse accessible without opening a smartphone app, but the larger strategy is the combination of dedicated hardware, cross-device context and transaction tools. Shopify and PayPal are opening checkout paths to the agent, while Amazon’s block demonstrates that an agent’s usefulness still depends on cooperation from the services it attempts to operate. Charm also gives Meta a lower-friction companion device alongside its more expensive VR glasses, although earlier AI handheld failures leave mainstream demand unresolved. The visual-data opt-out for AI glasses shows that data controls will remain part of the product proposition as Muse reaches more sensors and surfaces. What the sources don't address: how reliably Charm performs multi-step tasks in everyday use or how much the device will cost.

Muse Charm shows how a consumer agent can move beyond an app into dedicated hardware, glasses and transaction infrastructure. Practitioners must account for platform permissions, merchant-data settings and privacy controls when agents browse or purchase across third-party services.
