Key takeaways · 4

  • 01

The Connected Apps Platform is a single place for developers to build and manage apps for Search and Gemini.

  • 02

Developers choose Search, Gemini or both before review, and access is opening in phases.

  • 03

Google requires developers to describe at least three tasks their app can perform and reviews and tests apps before publication.

  • 04

In Search, Connected Apps are currently available in AI Mode in the United States and in English.

The connection route determines reach

Developers can connect an app through a cloud-hosted MCP server or through Android MCP using the AppFunctions APIs.[1] The cloud-hosted route reaches Search and Gemini users on web, Android and iOS, according to The Keyword.[2] The Android MCP route uses AppFunctions but is limited to Gemini on Android.[2] Teams deciding between the routes should weigh which Google surfaces and devices they want to support; the two options do not offer the same reach.[2] Google says developers can track traffic, latency and error rates after an app goes live.[1]

Review and policy requirements

Google reviews and tests every app before publication.[3] Developers must list at least three tasks their app can perform for users.[2] If an app requires sign-in, developers must provide Google with test accounts containing sample data; apps Google cannot fully test may be rejected.[3] Google’s policy bars third-party advertising and promotional material in Connected Apps, while allowing an app’s own brand elements, and requires each app to offer standalone value without advertising.[2] Policy violations can lead to rejection, suspension or removal of an app, or suspension or termination of its developer’s account.[2]

What users can access now

Google says it has launched more than 50 Connected Apps across Search and Gemini, covering areas including productivity, event ticketing, health and fitness.[1] Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton integrations are live in Gemini, with Google planning to bring them to Search in the coming weeks.[1] Google says a new Calm integration will be available across Search and Gemini.[1] In Search, Connected Apps are currently available in AI Mode in the United States and in English.[4] Users can name an app in an AI Mode request or select one from a list, and Google may default to the last app used for a particular task.[4]

Developers need to choose a connection route and target products with care, because the routes have different reach and every app must pass review. For teams evaluating the opportunity, the current Search limits and Google’s app policies are practical constraints to check before committing resources.
