The feature does not work in several call types, including live streams, recordings and client-side encrypted meetings.

What changed

Google says Meet’s Gemini-powered speech translation now supports 63 languages, expanding beyond an earlier version that supported a limited set of language pairs.[1] Participants can translate speech between any combination of the supported languages in the same meeting.[1] The feature also applies when several languages are spoken during a meeting or a speaker switches languages.[1] Google says the expanded feature is powered by Gemini 3.5 Live Translate.[1] For teams that previously had to configure one language pair for everyone, the expansion removes that specific setup constraint.[1]

How participants use it

Participants can independently turn on speech translation through a dedicated control in the meeting toolbar.[1] Translation is off by default for end users at the start of a meeting, and participants can enable it during the call.[1] Users can also specify additional languages they understand so those languages are not translated for them.[1] When translation is active, captions match the translated audio, providing a consistent reading and listening experience.[1] Google says users control whether their own speech is translated for others and can change that preference in Meet settings.[1]

Plans, access and rollout

Google lists Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, AI Expanded Access and AI Ultra Access as eligible plans or add-ons.[1] Eligible base Workspace and Google AI Pro plans allow up to 90 minutes of translation per meeting; AI Expanded Access, AI Ultra Access and Google AI Ultra plans allow up to eight hours.[1] Guests from other domains can use the feature when the meeting is organized by someone with an eligible plan, and both people in a one-to-one call can use it if either has an eligible plan.[1] A full rollout starts October 22, 2026, with visibility expected within one to three days; a gradual rollout starts November 2 and may take up to 15 days.[1] Mobile users need to update the Meet app.[1]

Limits to check before a meeting

Speech translation is unavailable for live streams, meeting recordings, client-side encrypted meetings, dial-in or third-party interoperability calls, and calls using adaptive audio.[1] Regional and age restrictions also apply.[1] Meet hardware users can hear translations of remote participants, but speech from the conference room is not translated for other participants.[1] Google says it does not store voice data or train models on users’ voices.[1] Workspace administrators should also note that speech translation is on by default for eligible editions when the Gemini for Meet admin setting is enabled, while the end-user control starts off during each meeting.[1]

For organizations with multilingual meetings, the expanded language coverage and participant-level controls may make it easier to accommodate different language needs in one call. Teams should still check plan eligibility, rollout status and call-type limitations before relying on translation for a meeting.
