  • 03

Existing Gems data is expected to migrate automatically as Skills replace the earlier customization tool.

How Gemini Skills Work

On September 30, 2026, Google began rolling out Skills directly in Gemini chat globally and said Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit and education customers would receive the functionality in the coming weeks. [1] Skills let users save frequently used instructions and invoke them from the prompt bar by typing a forward slash followed by the Skill’s name. [1]

Gemini can help create custom Skills from chats and automatically run them when users enter a matching prompt. [1] Users can stack multiple Skills for larger tasks and include reference files such as plain-text documents, PDFs or images. [1] Skills are already available in Gemini Spark, will replace Gems and are expected to receive existing Gems data through an automatic migration. [1]

What it means

Skills move Gemini’s task customization closer to the main chat workflow by making saved instructions directly callable and composable. Compared with Gems, the replacement adds an explicit slash-command interface, automatic matching, Skill stacking and support for reference files, while preserving continuity through planned data migration. What the sources don't address: how reliably Gemini will detect matching prompts, resolve conflicts between stacked Skills or govern access to uploaded reference files.

Gemini users can turn recurring prompts into reusable, callable instructions instead of reconstructing them for every task. Stacking Skills with reference files may also make multi-step drafting and preparation workflows more consistent.
