Two ways to work with Google files

Anthropic introduced an add-on that brings Claude into Docs, Sheets and Slides, plus separate beta connectors for creating and editing Google files from a Claude chat.[2] In the add-on, Claude appears in a sidebar next to the file; users can install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace and open it from the app’s Extensions menu.[2] Users can also paste a Google file link or ask Claude for a document, spreadsheet or presentation.[2] The connectors can open supported files in a pane beside the Claude conversation, and their access follows the user’s existing Google sharing permissions.[2]

Document, spreadsheet and slide tasks

In Docs, Anthropic says Claude can revise text or restyle headings without changing the surrounding formatting.[2] For larger rewrites, it can propose edits in suggestion cards in the sidebar.[2] In Sheets, Claude can write formulas, create pivot tables and native charts, and add tabs.[2] Anthropic also says Claude can use Python to join or clean spreadsheet data and write the results back to Sheets.[2] In Slides, Claude can build slides using the presentation’s layouts and themes.[2]

Approval and access controls

The add-on’s default “Ask before edits” mode waits for user approval before applying each change.[2] In “Accept all edits” mode, Claude applies changes without pausing for approval.[2] However, the add-on still pauses for approval before inserting an image from a web address, adding a link or removing someone’s access, regardless of the selected mode.[4] It cannot share a file, grant access or change ownership.[4] Anthropic says its Enterprise controls—including the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export—also apply to the add-on.[2]

Availability and limits

Anthropic says the add-on’s public beta is available on all paid Claude plans.[2] Google Workspace administrators can deploy it to a domain or selected groups through the Google Admin console.[2] On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner must enable the Google file connectors before users can use them.[2] The connectors are separate from Google Drive, and their pane works in Claude’s web app in Chrome or in Claude Desktop when its built-in browser is enabled.[3] The add-on beta does not support Firefox, and Google stops a single add-on operation after six minutes.[4] Google already offers Gemini natively in Workspace apps.[5]

The launch gives teams another way to work with documents, spreadsheets and presentations without leaving their Google files or Claude chats. The approval modes, permission model and operation limit are practical considerations for deciding which tasks to delegate and how to configure access.
